Pre-Dental Program Requirements at Pacific

Meeting all of the requirements will only guarantee an interview, not a seat, into the Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. On top of the requirements below, all pre-dental students must also take the Dental Admission Test (DAT) and get a minimum score of 18 in all categories (or a minimum score of 20 in all categories for 4+3).

APPLICATIONS / DAT SCORES MUST BE SUBMITTED BY SEPTEMBER 1ST

Dugoni guaranteed interview requirements

  1. Meet GPA and DAT requirements for your specific program (listed below)

  2. Enter Pacific as a Pre-Dental Track/Advantage/Major and follow the course requirements for that program.

  3. Have 40+ hours of shadowing from a General Dentist, not a close family member

  4. Take no more than 2 STEM classes outside Pacific, all must be taken at a 4-year college (exception for Dual Enrollment/AP, please refer to admissions website for details)

  5. Submit an application with 3 letters of recommendation (two Pacific science professors, one dentist) by September 1st of your admissions cycle

General Education (Breadth Program)

The 2+3 modality requires 3 GE categories other than Scientific Inquiry to be satisfied with coursework taken before starting at Pacific.

Seven GE categories of courses need to be satisfied, but Scientific Inquiry is already satisfied by the courses required in the major. A single math course can be used to satisfy both the math requirement of the major and the GE requirement for Quantitative Reasoning.

Each GE course falls in one of the categories below. When a category is required, you have to take at least one course in it for at least 3 credits. A maximum of two courses from any given department can be used to satisfy GE requirements.

The Breath Requirement states that a minimum of 60 credits must be obtained in disciplines other that the main one in the major (biology).

BIOL175 Ecology (Lab)

Professors: Dr. Hill, Dr. Stahlschmidt

*These courses do not have to be taken at Pacific; they can be transferred from acceptable universities for credit.

Recommended Biology Electives

BIOL71: Human Anatomy (Lab)

Professors: Dr. Torres, Dr. Gridi-Papp, Dr. Lloyd, Dr. Calcagno

BIOL128: Histology (No Lab)

Professor: Dr. Odom, Dr. Thomas

* The 2+3 modality requires a "Selected Biology Elective or Undergraduate Research". This cannot be Biochemistry, Human Physiology, Pharmacology, Immunology or Microbiology if the student needs to count these courses when taken at Dugoni Dental School in order to earn the BS. These courses are offered in both campuses and if repeated the student may not have enough non-overlapping Biology Electives to earn the BS.

Special Note

Bachelor's Degree

It is possible to gain a degree while staying in the 2+3 program. Some of the courses in dental school can be transferred back to undergrad and are counted towards your graduation. For more details, talk to your advisor or a PDS officer.

The 3+3 modality does not require AP or summer courses but almost every student takes them to be able to graduate within 3 years. This gives them the possibility of applying to other DDS programs in addition to that of Dugoni Dental School. The typical 3+3 coursework includes organic chemistry in the first or second summer, additional summer classes and some AP transfers.

MATH*

All pre-dental students have to take one of the following courses:

  • MATH 033 - Elements of Calculus

  • MATH 037 - Introduction to Statistics and Probability

  • MATH 041 - Pre-calculus

  • MATH 045 - Introduction to Finite Mathematics and Calculus

  • MATH 051 - Calculus I

  • MATH 053 - Calculus II

This course can be transferred from other colleges or satisfied with AP test scores 4 or 5.

We recommend statistics as it will be much more useful in your career as a dentist. A few schools may still require college calculus, therefore check and plan to apply for and choose your courses accordingly.

Special Note

Bachelor's Degree

Many 3+ 3 students choose to obtain a bachelor's degree. There are two ways this can be accomplished:

  1. Finishing all courses required for a B.A/B.S degree within three years. These students must complete all 4+3 program requirements by graduation. See next column for more details.

  2. Some of the courses (as well as units) in dental school can be transferred back to undergrad and are counted towards your graduation. For a BS you must take CORE001 and BIOL 101 and BIOL 175 before advancing, plus an additional 4 electives.  For more details, talk to your advisor or a PDS officer.
